So in the long run I think the tragic situation is going to have a positive effect for the climate.ĪNDY SERWER: Is there a place for nuclear energy?įRED KRUPP: Absolutely. In fact, the whole world has seen the instability of relying on oil and the need to electrify transportation and homes and businesses. But in the moderate to long term, we're seeing Europe really race to do energy efficiency, do heat pumps that save a lot of electricity, move to electric vehicles. There's no doubt that those humanitarian needs today take precedence over everything. In the short run, look, we've got to take care of people and their needs for electricity, their needs to be warm in the winter. And there's talk, of course of those economies turning back to coal, which of course, is a big negative from your perspective, right?įRED KRUPP: Yeah. But of course, for the world's sake and for everyone's livelihood's sake, we hope this downturn is short lived and shallow.ĪNDY SERWER: And another obvious big event that we're all watching closely is Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the impact that's having on energy supplies to Europe. So I'd say there are some positive effects. And also, alternative energy solar panels on my house are saving a bundle in electric costs every month. ![]() And right now, believe it or not, electric cars are far cheaper to run than gasoline cars. Energy efficiency as a way to save money. But in a positive way, people are looking for ways to save money. Fred, nice to see you.ĪNDY SERWER: Let me start off with a timely question that is linked to your work, and that is what does an economic downturn, potentially recession, mean in terms of fighting climate change?įRED KRUPP: Well, it means people are going to be more cost conscious, and that cuts both ways. And welcome to our guest, Fred Krupp, who is the President of the Environmental Defense Fund. We're trying to inspire them to do better, but we're also holding them accountable for results.ĪNDY SERWER: Hello, everyone, and welcome to Influencers.
